2 RTAF Gripen testing the capability to take off and land at an airport with a short runway to enhance the potential to protect Thai airspace.
The Royal Thai Air Force, by Squadron 701, Wing 7, brought 2 Gripen fighter-attack aircraft from Surat Thani Province to Wing 5 Airport, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, which is only 6,570 feet long, to practice testing the deployment and practice taking off and landing at an airport with a short runway. The result of the Gripen landing on the field is a Short Field Landing using a distance of 2,100 feet.
This exercise is in line with the Royal Thai Air Force's strategy to increase the capability of fighter aircraft to be flexible in deploying forces and performing missions from all airports and areas that are suitable throughout Thailand.
