New Zealand’s Helicopter-Launched Penguin Missile Strike during RIMPAC

HMNZS Te Mana’s Seasprite helicopter recently conducted a successful anti-ship guided missile launch against a target vessel.


Travelling at high subsonic speed and packing a 120kg warhead, the Penguin missile slammed into the hull of the US Navy's decommissioned amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu in deep waters off Hawaii during Exercise RIMPAC.


As intended, the missile detonated inside the vessel inflicting significant damage compromising the ships integrity.


A number of navies participated in this Sinking Exercise (SINKEX) designed to test airborne and shipborne munitions against seagoing threats.
