The opening ceremony of the 40,000-ton dry dock built by a Chinese company was held at the Thanlyin Naval Dockyard headquarters on March 8, and locally-made warships and patrol boats joined the force.
Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the military leader, said, “Today, we will be celebrating the grand opening of the first two warships to be built at the 40,000-ton shipyard, and the grand opening of the Tatmadaw (Navy) frigate (Thalun Min) and four riverine multi-purpose warships, which will also be commissioned and will serve alongside the army.”
The 40,000-ton shipyard was built in three phases with Chinese assistance, while the first two warships to be built were 63 meter class ASW vessels.
The shipyard will be able to build large-sized warships, as well as one 40,000-ton merchant ship or two large warships at the same time, the military leader said.
The Thalunmin (King Thalun F-19) frigate, which was commissioned on March 8, is the largest warship in the history of the navy, and can cover a distance of 3,418 nautical miles and sail for 279 hours in more than a month, which is a great help to the navy.
