The Ministry of National Defense announced that Minister of National Defense Ahn Gyu-back met with Vietnamese Minister of National Defense Phan Van Giang, who is visiting South Korea for a summit, at the Ministry of National Defense building in Seoul on the 12th and discussed ways to strengthen defense and defense industry cooperation between the two countries.
During the meeting, the two ministers discussed specific measures to enhance defense and defense industry cooperation in line with their "comprehensive strategic partnership." They
agreed to pursue the prompt revision of the "Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Defense Cooperation" to expand the scope of cooperation between the Ministry of National Defense and the military, and to work to ensure that the achievements of bilateral defense industry cooperation continue.
The two countries also signed an agreement to transfer a retired Korean corvette (the Jecheon). This is the third corvette transferred from Korea to Vietnam, following previous transfers in 2017 and 2018. (Zum)

In a major enhancement of the Vietnam People's Navy's surface combatant capabilities, the third Pohang-class corvette from the Republic of Korea, ROKS Jecheon (PCC-776), has officially been transferred today, August 12, 2025. This vessel will join its sister ships, HQ-18 and HQ-20, in bolstering Vietnam's maritime patrol and defense posture.
This significant naval transfer is part of a much broader strategic partnership between Hanoi and Seoul. It comes as Vietnam is also set to receive the formidable K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzer system. This landmark artillery deal, valued at approximately $276 million, will equip the Vietnam People's Army with one of the world's most advanced 155mm artillery systems, greatly improving long-range precision fire support.
The continued delivery of advanced military hardware from South Korea highlights the deepening trust and cooperation between the two nations, marking a new era in their defense relationship and contributing to regional stability.
