The Next Gen SAF will take shape by 2040, with new assets and capabilities to better defend Singapore’s land, waters and skies.
These include Next Gen Infantry Battalions and new armoured tracked carriers and howitzers for The Singapore Army, Multi-Role Combat Vessels, Invincible-class submarines, and unmanned vessels for the Republic of Singapore Navy, as well as F-15SG and F-35 fighter jets and Next Gen Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for The Republic of Singapore Air Force.
As good and ambitious as the Next Gen SAF is, there are some gaps in capabilities which recent events and developments have warned us against – specifically threats in the digital domain. To complete that SAF 2040, a fourth service is needed: the Digital and Intelligence Service or DIS.
The Command, Control, Communications and Computers and Intelligence (C4I) Community will be evolved into the DIS. This new fourth Service will allow the SAF to better train and fight as a networked and integrated force to deal with digital threats that will grow in scale, sophistication and organisation. The DIS is expected to be set up by the last quarter of this year.
