The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is getting PHP58,371,324,000.00 for its modernization program in 2021, Senator Ping Lacson said on November 20 as he sponsors Department of National Defense (DND)’s 2021 budget.
This is after part of funding for AFP’s modernization program was used for COVID-19 response. Senator Lacson said a total of PHP17.48 billion for AFP modernization was used for COVID-19 response.
For 2021, the DBM returned the PHP8 billion, with an addition of PHP2 billion under general appropriations bill.
“Instead of 25 billion, there is 35 billion now for the AFP modernization. Plus another 5 billion under the unprogrammed funds, for a total of 40 billion pesos,” Senator Lacson said.
He also noted that adding the AFP’s share from Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA)’s profit worth PHP18.37 billion, funding for AFP upgrade will amount to PHP58,371,324,000.
